​Welcome to the Ossipee Central School Wax Museum of Famous People



Students in Mrs. McNevich's classroom researched famous people who lived during the early 1800's as a start of the Western Expansion. After their researched they created this Wiki Space and then has a "living" wax museum where they dressed as their person, and told about their life. This was a huge success! Phillis Wheatley

Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley was the first important African American poet. She was brought to Boston on a slave ship when she was about 8 years old. John Wheatley, a wealthy merchant tailor, bought Phillis as a servant for his wife.
Phillis learned to read and write from the family that bought her. Phillis was very happy that she learned to write poems. She loved to write.
Phillis was very religious. Some of her poems showed her satisfaction at becoming a Christian in American society. She also wrote about more worldly problems, as in "To the Right Honorable William, Earl of Dartmouth" (1773). After returning from England, Wheatley was freed and married John Peters, a free black man. Her reputation as a poet soon declined, nobody really knows when she died it was somewhere around Dec. 5, 1784.

Sacagawea



She was born in 1784 in Idaho. She was a Shoshone Indian. She was 12 years old she was kidnapped Minatare (1800). On April 7, 1805 she started her expedition. During the expedition she had a baby and carried it on her back. Her father was head chief of the Shoshone Indian. Her husband wouldn’t her any medicine and if she didn’t live it would be his fault. Her little infant Charbonneau (Jean Baptise).She arrived in Madam near mouth of Knife River in North Dakota, October 17, 1804. They arrived where Lewis met Lethem - Shoshone chief Camahwait. She helped secure hourses, supplies, and Shoshone guides to assists in the trip. She died in 1812 December 20 in Nebraska at age 38.







Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 in the town of Shadwell, Virginia. Thomas was a man of many talents, he was a lawyer, statesman, and President of the United States from 1801-1809. He was also an inventor, a writer, and a musician.
Thomas Jefferson went to the University of Virginia. His Father’s name Peter Jefferson and his mother’s name was Jane Jefferson. He had six sisters & one brother (names unknown). His father died in 1757.
He owned a plantatition and no matter how smart he was he would not set his slaves free. He inherited the slaves from his father and stepfather.
President Jefferson was president during the war with Tripoli. He also wrote the Declaration of Independence. Aaron Burr was Thomas Jefferson’s vice president. Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr had a duel. Aaron Burr won. Thomas died in Montcello, Virginia in 1826. Jefferson’s daughter had twelve children. He owned a plantatition and no matter how smart he was he could not set his slaves free. After his wife’s death he never remarried again.

Emma Hart Willard was in women’s rights higher education
· She wanted rights for women to learn and go to college
· 1807 got married to John Willard
· She started teaching when she was 16 years old she went to establish girls brooding school at Middlebury, Vermont in 1814, she moved to Troy ,New York in 1821.There was an old seminary and a place right by it and she got permission to build a school right by it. And it became famous. It’s called Emma Willard School.
· She had seventeen children
· She died on April 15,1870 Troy ,New York
· Now Emma Willard school is still here and girls everywhere are coming to Emma Willard School its very popular

Betsy Ross was famous for making the American Flag. Betsy made the flag on June 14,1777.Betsy was born on January 1, 1752 and died in 1836. Betsy’s dad was named Samuel Grison. Betsy was born in Pennsylvania. Betsy had seven daughters. Betsy is buried in Mount Moriah cemetery. Betsy was married three times. Betsy went to a school called Friends School. Betsy was a seamstress. Betsy was the eighth in line of seventeen. Betsy owned a shop on Arch Street even when she died in the Revolutionary War. Betsy is also known as Elizabeth Griscom Ross Claypool. Betsy got exspelled from the friend meeting because; she got married outside of the meeting. Betsy’s moms name is Rebecca James. Betsy’s great aunts thought her how to sew. Betsy made a five pointed star in one snip.

Meriwether Lewis

Lewis was an army officer and an explorer

· Lewis’s last words were “I’m no coward , but I’m so strong ; it is hard to die”
· The expedition I made with William Clark and Sacajawea was 8,000 miles ,2 years long, 2 Back Feet Indians were killed, 125 new animals and 180 new plants were found ,and thet met 9 different Indian tribes
· Lewis learned Latin, math, natural science, and English grammar
· Lewis was governor of the Louisiana territory from 1807-1809
· Lewis was never married

ALEXANDER HAMILTON worked with President GEORGE WASHINGTON. ALEXANDER was born in 1755 and died 1804. ALEXANDER was boldest and most creative thinkers of his time, ALEXANDER CLAIMED HE WAS BORN ON JAN 11, 1757. ALEXANDER WAS 13 WHEN his mom died in 1768. ALEXANDER was born in the West Indies. Alexder Hamilton was the second child of James Hamilton. His mother was Rachel Lavien. JAMES HAMILTON left his wife and two children in 1765.
Alexander was Secretary of the Treasury. He wanted to create a national bank, The Bank of the United States. Burr ran for governor of N.Y. in 1804. HAMILTON CRITICIZED Burr’s character to defeat him. BURR lost for governor then challenged HAMILTON TO A duel in Weehawken, N.J on July 11, 1804. HAMILTON and BURR did a duel with pistols and HAMILTON got shot and died the next day.

Abigail Powers Fillmore was born Abigail Powers in 1798 and died in 1853. She is known for being the first wife of Millard Fillmore, who served as the President of the United States from 1852-1853.
Abigail Powers was born in Stillwater, NY on March 12, 1798. Her father, a Baptist minister, died when Abigail was two years old. After his death, the family suffered financially. From the time Abigail was a girl, she loved to read. Her love of reading led her to become a teacher as an adult. She married Mr. Millard Fillmore in February of 1826 at the age of 28.
Mrs. Powers Fillmore worked to make the White House a cultural center. At other times, she invited some other favorite authors to discussion groups at the White House Library. Such authors included the American writer Washington Irving and the English novelist Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackery.
Abigail Powers Fillmore died on March 30, 1853, less than a month after her husband left the office of President. Five years later, President Millard Fillmore remarried.





Sarah Josepha Hale

Sarah Josepha Hale was born in October 24, 1788, Newport, New Hampshire.Sarah Josepha Hale was one of the most famous editors for the Ladies Magazine in the United States in the 1800's.
Sarah Josepha Hale persuaded President Lincoln to make Thanksgiving a national holiday because Thanksgiving was not a national holiday yet. Sarah Josepha Hale was the writer of Mary Had a Little Lamb. Sarah wrote the poem foe little girls and boys to read.
Sarah Josepha Hale had five kids.Then Sarah Josepha Hale's husband died in 1822. When Sarah Josepha Hale was 91 she died in1879. People remembered her by her poem Mary Had a Little Lamb.

She was born on December 17, 1760 in Plymouth, Massachusetts and was African American.
The first woman to draw a soldier’s pension
She joined the Revolutionary War when she was 21. In May 1782, she enlisted in the forth regiment of the American army. She had to disguise herself as a man so she could join the army. On March 11, 1805 Sampson was listed among those receiving pension payments from the United States government.

Sampson's ancestry is traced back to pilgrim. Her mother’s lineage was traced to Governor William Bradford. Her cousin died when she was about eight years old. Deborah liked learning so she became a teacher. Becoming a teacher she got a sum of twelve dollars. She used that twelve dollars she had she spent on materials for her class. She died in April 29, 1827 because she had a bad fever.

Harriet Tubman was born in Bucktown Maryland in 1820. Harriet Tubman was an African American who helped hundreds of slaves in the southern United States to be free. She was the leader in the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery. Her real name was Araminta Ross. But she changed her first name after her mother. When Harriet was a child she tried to stop a supervisor from punishing another slave. The supervisor threw a weight metal at Harriet’s skull. Her skull was badly fractured.
Harriet was married to John Tubman. Harriet and John Tubman had eleven kids. In the year of 1913, Harriet died at 93 years old. She died of old age New York City. She will be none as the one who helped the slaves that needed to be free.

William Clark was born in Caroline Country, Virginia on August 1, 1770. William was the ninth child born as a brother in his family. William was born in the family home in Caroline Country. William’s brother was a hero in the Revolutionary war in America and so was his dad but his dad was a general. William’s dad’s name was George Rogers Clark. William was the youngest in the family. Clark joined the United States army in1790 and first met Lewis in 1795. Clark fought in the battle of Fallen Timbers. Clark was governor himself from 1813 to 1821 for Missouri. Lewis and Clark’s expedition traveled a total of about 8,000 miles. The Expedition started on May 14, 1804. There were 45 men in three boats in total. Lewis and Clark met Sacajawea and her husband Toussaint Charbonneau at a village in Fort Mandan and spent 5 months there. Clark married Julia Hancock and then had a child. Clark named his son the same name as his friend Meriwether Lewis. William’s death was on September 1, 1838 in St Louis, Missouri of a gunshot. He died at the age of 68 years old.




Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on December 10, 1830. She became a well known a poet, writing over 1700 poems. She was famous because one of her best pomes was called “A Route of Evanescence”. It described a fluttering humming bird. On February 14, 1866 two of her poems got published. She continued to write her poems in 1870.
She went to college and got her education. She couldn’t get married because of father wouldn’t let her. She wanted to get married to Otis Lord. Her father’s name was Edward Dickinson; her mother’s name was Emily Norcross Dickinson. Her Father was a leading lawyer of Amherst town, but her Father died in 1874 Emily was 44 years old. Emily’s Mother died in 1882. Later in Emily’s life Otis Lord died. On May 15, 1886 Emily Dickinson dies, alone at the age 56. 11 of her poems appeared in print during Emily’s lifetime.
